Turid Dramé started to dance from the age of 6 with disco and jazzballet, but when she was invited to join an African dance workshop she felt like ‘coming home’. From 1989 she trained in Senegal, Burkina Faso, France, Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands with the top of West-Africa. Turid was lucky to have trained with dancers from Guinee, Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso and Cameroen like Youssouf Koumbassa, Merlin Nyakam, Marie Basse, Bebey Youla, Dioncounda Diarra, Babacar M’Baye, Malang Bayo, M’Baye N’Diaye, Ken N’Diaye, Tackou Cissokho and many others. Not to be missed in the list of inspiring teachers is Issa Sow, dancer of the National Ballet of Senegal. Turid danced in his African-Dutch-Belgian ballet ‘Mame Bambe’ from 1994-1997. A great part of Turid’s style and knowledge is thanks to him.
In Dakar (Senegal) she danced with the group “les Pirates de Dieupeul” with Pape Assane Sow and Hamet Niang. In 1996 she performed with Les Pirates several times with the well-known Senegalese artist Youssou N'Dour. She was a solo dancer in various groups in the Netherlands like “N’Guewel Keur Gi” of Oké Sene and in “Foté Saba” with Jeanine Theunissen, Victorien Barendrecht, Thomas Bonenkamp, Rutger van Ree and Jaco Benders.
From 1994 Turid gives classes and workshops to companies, schools and dance groups. She is specialised in West-African dances like the various djembé dances from Guinee and Mali, the Bougarabou, Seouraba and Manotch dances from the Casamance (S-Senegal) and the Sabardance from the ethnic group the Wolof from Senegal.
Turid’s classes & workshops are known to be dynamic and fun: in an African atmosphere, with a smile on your face and working till you sweat. A good warming-up, working on a certain rhythm with movements through the romm, piece of choreography, now and then a song and telling the background of the rhythm, all with the fantastic percussion and ngoni accompanyment by Moussé Dramé and team.
