African Percussion:
Classes:
The most important in the classes is making the rhythm together. Students learn o the djembé with each rhythm the history of the rhythm (i fit is meant for wedding party, circumcision, birth etc.) Each rhythm has various djembéparts. The amount of parts (every rhythm has many) taught by Moussé depents on the level of the group: beginners learn 2 till 3 parts, semi-advanced 3 till 4 parts etc.

During the class everybody rotates on the doundouns (bass drum), so everybody gets the chance to learn them as well.

Technique: during the classes Moussé works weekly on the sound of the various ‘hits’ you make with you hands like the slap, toon and bass, as well as the position of you body, hands etc. and the way you position your djembé.
Beginners receive a weekly warming up with focus on thechnique and repetition of the technique. The semi-advanced and advanced technique is homework to practise daily and regularly there is around of technique’ that every player shows their sound and Moussé advices them how to improve. The higher level students also learn more complex djembéparts and doundounparts and they work on various soloparts

Buit above all, for Moussé the interaction between his students and his students with himself are the most important: “If they are full of energy they receive it 3 times back and if the energy is sometimes less they will end the class with a lot anyways!”

What you need:
In classes we have 1 to 5 doundoun sets, but you would need your own djembé, either by renting or buying, in order for you to practise at home as well. In Amsterdam you can hire a djembé per class for 2,50 euros.

A reasonable djembé cost between 250-350 euros, but you could try through Marktplaats or various markets (like Waterlooplein in Amsterdam). Take care that the djembé is not too small, watch the quality of the wood and skin and metal rings, and it should have the sound that you personally like of course.

Age:
The best age to start playing African Percussion is from 7 years on till 80!.

Check the performance of 1 of Moussé’s classes during our End party:
